AI in music has become shorthand for one thing: generation. That shift happened quickly, and for understandable reasons. Generated songs are easy to demo, easy to debate, and easy to turn into a headline.

When a technology first becomes visible, public understanding tends to anchor to the most legible example. In music, that example was generative audio. A prompt goes in, a song comes out, and everyone immediately understands why it is controversial.

But visibility is not the same thing as completeness. The fact that generative music became the center of the conversation does not mean it should define the category.

Popularity is not the same thing as musical understanding

Many modern discovery systems are optimized around who listens to what, what tends to come next, and what keeps users engaged inside a platform. Those are powerful systems, but they are not neutral interpretations of music.
